Kirsch

... is not a liqueur but a fruit brandy. Brandy is a spirit; the difference between a spirit and a liqueur is that a spirit is made by distilling grains, fruit, or vegetables (which have already gone through alcoholic fermentation), whereas a liqueur is made by distilling a spirit that has been flavored with fruit, cream, herbs, spices, flowers or nuts, and bottling it with added sugar or other sweetener.

Kirsch is more properly known as kirschwasser, which is German for 'cherry water'.
